PriceSmart Just Bet $28 Million That Montego Bay Can Support Another Warehouse Club

PriceSmart opened a US$28 million store in St James on October 1, and on paper it reads like a routine retail expansion. Another location, another ribbon cutting, another membership card in another wallet.

Underneath it, it’s a bet on where Jamaican spending actually lives outside Kingston. St James, with Montego Bay doing the heavy lifting, has spent years building itself into the island’s real second commercial center, riding tourism density and the airlift that comes with it. Nobody writes a $28 million check on vibes. Somebody ran the numbers on local purchasing power first, and they liked what they saw.

That’s the part worth sitting with if you’re building in retail, distribution, or consumer goods out west. A $28 million PriceSmart is a vote of confidence in the market. It’s also a new competitive floor. Every local supplier and wholesaler in the parish now has to either find a way into that supply chain or go head to head with warehouse-club pricing power they can’t easily match.

The grand opening is the easy headline. What happens to the small retailers and suppliers orbiting that new building over the next eighteen months is the one actually worth a follow-up.
